“To make waiting for the movie shorter, here is small preview of the shots from Siurana – Spain. Adam Ondra is trying 2 very different superhard 9b routes. Unclimbed bouldery project and then amazing line from Chris Sharma – Golpe de Estado 9b.”

Climber: Adam Ondra
Location: Siurana

  1. He is an amazing climber but a bit to crazy for me, he screams horrendously, horrendously.

  2. More levels, more screams ! ^^

  3. He is screaming from one reason… when he was small child and climbed and did not make a route, he cried. His other told him “Don´t cry, just fight as much as you can, and if you fail, just scream, or swear… but do not cry..”

    So he is doing it…

And he puts incredible energy into his climbing. It is not an anger! adam is most peacefull person I know, honestly…

He is very calm and smiling after his screaming, it is just his way of ventilating his enormous focus / effort on a route… Is it bad? I hope he will remain the same, it is just the beginning of really amazing things, this firs “official” 9b. And Adam knows best how to do it… But of course, you may not like it, but actually it does not matter 😉

  4. That might be a beginner question but how did the quickdraws get there in the first place, they all seem preplaced.

If it is a super hard route, how did they do that?

  5. This climber inspires me by is passion and efforts given.

    Comment by Simon — January 24, 2011 @ 8:29 pm

  6. @Eric
Either he rapped down and place all the draws, or on his first attempt or so, he climbed to each bolt, clipped in, then either rested or fell after a few more moves that he hadn’t figured out yet. Also, sometimes on really overhanging routes people will install permanent quickdraws.

  7. I don’t care how good Ondra is, the sound of him screaming and throwing a tantrum drives me f***ing crazy.

    Comment by JoBlo — January 25, 2011 @ 12:11 am

  8. JoBlo, you have the full right to do it, but who cares about your stupid notes? Of course, some other blind egoists do… 😉

    Comment by Petr Pavlicek — January 25, 2011 @ 1:13 am

  9. A good climber, but from the screams I can tell that climbing is something different for me than it is for him.

    Comment by Anonymous — January 25, 2011 @ 4:13 am

  10. I don’t know what my ego has to do with disliking the nails-on-chalkboard sound that kid makes. Just saying… that is one horrible sound.

  11. I agree with the sentiment here.. Although an amazing climber, he is also a big suck…

  13. Very well done. Inspiring. I liked the move at 3:40.

    Comment by Anonymous — January 25, 2011 @ 5:51 am

  14. Impressive climber but I won’t consider watching one of his climbing movies as long as he screams that way. We all suck at our own level.

    Comment by Julien — January 25, 2011 @ 6:29 am

  15. Oh come on… He is 16 here… Normal boy “under the eyes of the world climbing comunity” doing only what he loves so much.. giving it 100%, being the best these days… Is it really a reason to smile?
I bet that if you meet Adam in reality, you would love him immediately, because he has 2 faces. One is non human strange agressive creature, screaming like an angry animal, but he is really one of the most kind and peaceful people I have ever met in my life. If he would be egoistic idiot, even if the best climbing star ever, I would never follow him with camera for 2 years, because it was not very funny, but f.cking hard job, I do not mean physicaly now.. But he is interesting as a person, will be inspiring for many kids who do not know what to do with their life, so I did.
But on the other hand I understand you, you can not recognize it from such a videos like this.. I also thought that he is strange, before I met him in 2009. after a few minutes I realized I had wrong opinion, only from the videos and reactions on the reactions like yours. We all judge very wrong very often, putting people into boxes, without deeper knowledge. I recognized that I was wrong. But you never will, because you will not watch the final movie ;-)) Peace, I do not really offend anybody.. Petr

  16. I met Adam in 2008 in siurana, when he climbed La Rambla – and I can tell you, you stupid morons – that he really is that kind of person Petr wrote about.
and that you don´t like his screaming?? who gives a two shits about that?? I don´t like screaming of one other climber – I´m pretty sure you know who – should I write bullshit like yours below his videos??

    whine less, climb more.

  19. I even liked his screaming :)
…it shows me how hard he tries and also how frustrated he is when falling off the route (just like I am sometimes…)

But I also can understand that screaming in general is not what you would consider as a part of “Edlinger-Nature-Style-Climbing”… but who cares! :)

    yeah…it’s just climbing

  21. His screaming is totally animalistic, love it! When you look at him he looks like a little lame geek, but on the rock he goes crazy. Inpsiring!

    Comment by Anonymous — January 26, 2011 @ 10:49 pm

  22. He’s frustrated because he can’t climb up rocks… Pretty stupid thing to get upset about if you ask me. I’d hate to see how frustrated he got if something REAL actually happened to him – like being the victim of a horrible natural disaster, or being a victim a target of religious persecution. Then I’m sure he’d look back and think how his anger, frustration, and tantrums were somewhat over-dramatic and unnecessary.

  23. I believe all the attacks against Adam are simply childish. Once again, talk less and climb more. I think that climbing is great not just because it is fun, but also and mostly because it is a mix of challenge, failure, commitment, failure again and…yes, also screams.

  26. I agree that climbing is great because it is a microcosm of life: there are ups, downs, failures, and successes. Therefore, through climbing, we can see exactly how we react to those very successes and failures. Let me ask you, do you throw a tantrum when you miss the bus or don’t get the job for which you applied? Do you throw a fit when your car breaks down? Or do you take it in stride and deal with the issues in a mature way?

From what people are saying, Adam is a super chill guy off the rock. Then why does he whine and whimper when he falls? Should climbing be THAT frustrating? Should something that you love doing make you that upset? Is being upset like that productive? Healthy?

  27. Adam Ondra is an athlete performing at the highest level. All this blah..blah.. about ‘doing what you love’ applies more to people climbing recreationally only.
Also, he’s still just a kid.. give him some slack!

  28. @ Anonymous — January 28, 2011 @ 3:54 am:
yes, you´re totally right. and that´s why Sharma, Graham, Andrada, Usobiaga and all these other guys, who love climbing as much as Adam, do NOT yell “fuck”, “shit”, “joder” and “puta” everytime they fall or miss the hold. and I´m sure you don´t do it either.

ps. there´s pure irony in my post, in case you haven´t noticed..

    Comment by zlobr — January 28, 2011 @ 9:47 am

  29. I guess this is his 26th attempt of that route, so I think yelling is appropriate… he?

    Comment by Zoix096 — January 28, 2011 @ 3:26 pm

  30. I don’t know why I contribute to this clusterfuck, but half of you are assholes.

He screams because it helps him get the job done. Dedication and passion display in different ways. To call it “whining” is blind. To call it a tantrum is imbecilic. A tantrum is thrown to get the attention of others, to get your way. He is screaming because he gave his all and it was not enough. It is for his own sake, and if you cannot let him express this in his own way I think it is likely that you have never truly given 100% of yourself to something and failed.

    Comment by Biff Loman — January 28, 2011 @ 4:38 pm

  31. For god’s sake! This is the most sensitive, self righteous group of climbers I ever did see. I think we all understand why people scream, Biff. If you climb, you scream. This kid just has a shrill, glass-breaking banshee scream in every video I’ve seen him in. He climbs fucking hard and screams fucking bloody murder. That’s it. You all have turned this into a climber’s version of Leave Britney Alone.

“If you cannot let him express this in his own way I think it is likely that you have never truly given 100% of yourself to something and failed.”

So you’re saying that in order to “give 100% and fail” you have to scream like a “banshee,” making a “nail-on-the-chalkboard” yell? Because that’s what you said, dumb-ass.

I’m not sure about you, but I’m for Team Noscream

  34. @ JoBlo and all anonymous:

I don´t get it.. from his previous videos you had to know that he screams when he climb.. if his screaming bothers you that much then why the fuck do you keep watching his new stuff?? and if you really have to watch him climb – turn the sound off and listen to something else – that way you can save your stupid comments for yourselfs, you dumbshits..

    Comment by zlobr — January 29, 2011 @ 9:35 am

  37. Get over your self guys. Obviously you climb for fun and will most likely never manage to send anything Adam climbed when he was 12. He is a professional climber, an athlete who loves what he does. So whatever gets him to perform better and stay motivated is useful. Who ever said Sharma does not scream was probably joking 😀 Don’t just watch the videos. I wish you all had the chance to meet some of these super climbers in real life. Let’s all enjoy what we do and be little less critical of the others. Live and let live :)

    Comment by Honza — January 30, 2011 @ 8:47 pm

  38. It’s obviously about maturity, not passion. Get into it, then get over it. He’s an amazingly talented climber, hands down. I just can’t imagine Peter Croft or John Bachar flipping out like that…or even standing for it. If I had the talent and opportunity that Ondra has to climb around the world with the best climbers alive, I’d work on my maturity and presence.
It looks like there are a lot of people out there who have mad respect for the kid’s abilities, but are loosing interest in watching footage of him for this very reason. I’m mean, shit, most videos on this site have 4-7 comments. This is #38. And check this:

  39. And just so I don’t feel like a total asshole, big respect for Petr Pavlicek for defending his boy despite all the criticism. I’m sure he’s a great kid. Just get him a Zen book or something and tell him to keep it all in perspective.

  40. In some delicate places, screamming can be seen as a reason to ban climbing. Specially private owned places.
