Nice bouldering video made by Cedar Wright for “Blue Water Ropes”. It features fifteen Year Old Sierra Blair-Coyle telling us how motivating can climbing competition be… Very inspiring!
Author: Cedar Wright Climber: Sierra Blair-Coyle Language: EN
Good climber with no power. Tell me again why we are impressed with the motivation of a 15yr old? Put someone who has actually accomplished something on the screen like Robyn Erbersfield (sp) or Timy Fairfield. At least those two have done something in competition for the sport.
Also, why is a rope company sponsoring a boulderer????????
lastly, for a 15 year old girl………put some clothes on, you look like a f-ing slut.
Comment by Bill Buck — August 14, 2009 @ 10:20 pm
I could not agree more. I am so tired of kids acting like they are gods gift to the planet. What did she get…..4th. I mean way to go, but why should I be interested? Why not leave the training and advice the professionals…….maybe ones who have competed in international bouldering/difficulty comps. Better yet, have a feature on motivation and competition from the girl who ACTUALLY WON.
Plus as a female climber, ALL of them need to put some clothes on. Alex Johnson (from what I saw in the different videos) seemed to be the only one wearing a shirt. Very surprised her parents condone her apparel. If they wanted to sell their daughter, go to the vegas strip. As a parent of two girls, I am mortified at her dress considering she is 15.
Very UN-inspiring piece considering the author screwed up the teaser …..”Sierra Blair-Coyle telling us how motivating can be climbing competition”
Comment by Marcy Livingston — August 16, 2009 @ 1:25 am
Awesome video!!! What a positive outlook she has. “Hard work really DOES pay off”! I loved that comment.
And finally, female climbers are starting to dress like the REST of the world. No more long, out of style boy shorts and baggy guy t-shirts. How refreshing to see someone with style!!!
Comment by Shelly Marx — August 16, 2009 @ 4:51 am
Very well made video and a young climber with a positive attitude which is great to see. Lisa Rands was 5th, so placing 4th, she must be a good climber. Sports bras and shorts are normal attire for female sports too……
Comment by Rick Smith — August 17, 2009 @ 12:48 am
Awesome video! You go girl!
Comment by Julie Strass — August 20, 2009 @ 6:14 am
Lisa Rands has bouldered V12, and REAL v12 at that, what about this girl? 8A scorecard has a soft v7 as her hardest send……..oh yeah, she must be better than Lisa Rands. I have done that problem she clamis in Vegas, more like V5.
Plus, whats the second word in “sports bra”? Since you dont have any common sense, I will tell you what it is…………………..its BRA. And in the American culture, bras are worn UNDERNEATH a shirt or tank top. You seem to like little girls in skimpy attire. What are you Rick Smith?????? a pedophile?
I agree that sports bras and shorts for females are normal competition attire………..for beach volleyball and surfing. So, there must be a reason all the female world cup competitors dont dress like that……probably because that country wants their female athletes to look professional, not like a bunch of sluts.
Comment by Kim Marx — August 20, 2009 @ 6:12 pm
I don’t understand why so many people are concerned about what she is wearing and saying things about her parents trying to sell her like she is a prostitute. That isn’t what they are doing at all. Climbing is only one aspect of Sierra’s life. When she is hanging out with her friends being the typical teenage girl, she dresses modestly. This is only what she wears to climb in because coming from Arizona it is very hot for a majority of the year and no one wants to wear pants when it is over 100 degrees outside. She is a very down to earth girl who works hard to achieve her personal goals in climbing. If you ACTUALLY knew Sierra, you would realize that she isn’t an “f-ing slut” and that she is just a normal teenage girl living her life to the fullest. She doesn’t think she is a god or above anyone else and a majority of the comments left here are very rude and hurtful. She is a person who has feelings too and i know for a fact that it hurts her to see that people are posting hateful comments and making assumptions about her based on what she is wearing when they don’t know her. I would just think about what you are saying before you post something that could hurt a 15 year-old’s self-esteem.

If a 15yr old girl wants to play with the big kids, she better be ready. As someone who was standing on that rooftop, yes….it was hot. However I am not stripping down to my bra and panties because of it. Get a reality check………Alex Johnson wears appropriate clothing as did Anna Stor, and other athletes. I know when I was 15, I was very conscious of my body and did not want to be “showcasing” it as she is.
As far as people saying she is a slut…..thats probably a bit to much. On the other hand, if you wald around all day with a beer in your hand, people are going to assume you are drunk and probably an alcoholic. It may not be true, but perception is reality.
Its a shame her parents are more concerned with her selling sex rather than her climbing ability.
Comment by Ashley Harrison — September 6, 2009 @ 1:09 am
Uh, I would say she WAS ready to “play with the big kids”. Playing with “the big kids” should be in respect to her climbing. She finished 4th didn’t she??? Jealousy from all the negative commentators is an ugly, ugly character flaw. Haven’t you figured out yet that when you’re judging other people it’s a negative reflection of yourself?
Your life must be pretty sad that you feel you have to comment on a teenagers attire.

“Its a shame her parents are more concerned with her selling sex rather than her climbing ability.” as said by a previous post, i personally know her parents, i have never seen a mom and a dad so dedicated to their daughters sport especially in climbing. in reality maybe some can say she isnt wearing enought, but its her choice, if you’ve been to arizona in the summer you probably wont feel like wearing much more that she is, which she’s used to so its natural to dress that way. all in all, shes 15 climbing strong and has dedicated her life to do so, give her some credit for being part of the few climber girls that get out there and compete and train hard to play with “the big kids” she’s earned alot of respect from me especially while keeping a positive attitude above all of this.
keep crankin girl!

So- lets watch the magazine articles written on this particular event. Will they print a picture of the winner of the competition or will they print a picture of the girl with the least amount of clothes on? I have already seen the Dead Point magazine, and there is not a picture of Alex Johnson~1st place winner, but there is a picture of Sierra Blai-Coyle. Hummm….
Comment by PATTI — September 12, 2009 @ 3:32 am
Oh yeah, I saw that picture in DP magazine…….the one that actually points out (nearly making fun of) how little clothes she has on. Something like 1/3 of a yard makes up her clothes…..yeah, thats something to brag about (sarchasm intended). That picture was clearly taken to make fun of her clothing. Note, DPM did not say anything about results or how she did…….NO, they only put it in there to to make fun of. Plus, IF she is dressed appropriately, would she be allowed to wear that attire to high school?….or would she get “dress coded”?
Now I dont favor Puccio wearing very little as well. However, SHE IS AN ADULT, NOT A LITTLE GIRL. How are mommy and daddy going to feel when mr 19yr old decides to hit that and she gets prego?? As Ashley said in an earlier post…..it was just as hot in SLC for Alex Johnson, and she is dressed appropriatly. Perception IS reality my friends.
Props to being 15 and competing,….but you got 4th. Thats better than I can do, but why not win something and then spray about how you are better than Lisa Rands. Or better yet, go boulder something hard……like the Mandala.
Now I have visited friends in AZ and it is hot. However, I am pretty sure she trains INSIDE. I know 2 of the three major gyms have AC…… so be that modest typical teenage girl everyone says you are and dress like one. I bet her parents dont dress like that.
This little thread is entertaining. Someone should put this on climbing.com.

So-so video. She’s a cutie, but I have no respect for comp climbers. Go out and climb a fucking rock, learn the subleties, and stop thinking you are the shit because you train on plastic 7 days a week. There should be videos about badass climbers like Bob Horan, Jason Kehl and Nalle Hukkitaival, not some teenage gym rat with no style.
Comment by Gabe Myers — September 30, 2010 @ 1:06 am
Great video! A very smooth climber with great technique, good for her. Living in a house and training on plastic, you live better and can train more effectively. Gym rats are the future of the sport for this reason, they ultimately send harder outside. There are plenty of people sending hard outside anyway, but very few placing high in comps, wink, wink, thats why they don’t compete, hard on the ego……
