Touching the void with Steph Davis & Dean Potter
“Free Solo is a dialog with fear”… This video features amazing images from the towers of Utah and the north face of Eiger with Steph Davis and Dean Potter. Free solo is a a practice I wouldn’t recommend to anyone but yet, Steph and Dean make it look very nice…

Dean’s doing interesting stuff – the Eiger solo is not only technically brilliant, but really aesthetic. I wore a BASE rig soloing out of a bad spot on the Liberty Bell in the NW Cascades – didn’t take the pitch and see if I could turn out of the rotation, but it’s certainly a different feeling than soloing without any rig at all.
Folks have predicted the convergence of BASE and climbing since back when Randy Leavitt was still falling off stuff with a rig on – Dean’s done that convergence proud, Steph as well. It’ll always be a tiny group of folks with skills in both camps, not easy to stay current in either let alone the two at once. I know of dozens of big routes that are awaiting BASE exits – let alone BASE solos – just lacking the talented folks to do ‘em yet, and my old bones are a bit too brittle to play the game at that edge any more.
Cheers,
